Students at the school’s Roberts Farm

OXFORD HILLS — October is National Farm to School Month an annual campaign to recognize, appreciate and celebrate the connections happening across the country between kids, families and their community food systems.

In August, Oxford Hills Schools sent our local Farm to School Team to the first Maine Farm and Sea to School Institute which was held over 3 days at the Ecology School in Saco. This team, made up of school folks and community members including students, was one of 3 district teams in Maine chosen to participate.

At the Institute, The Oxford Hills Farm to School Team launched a year long project working on the 3 C goals of Farm to School approach:

  • Cafeterias become inviting places that provide opportunities to learn, connect and nourish student bodies.
  • Classrooms provide intentional, experiential learning opportunities that connect students to their community so they are engaged in how food nourishes their bodies, hot it is produced, and how it enriches the community.
  • Our Community invests in local food systems that support healthy people, a robust economy and a resilient environment through our Farm to School Program.

A Farm to School Forum will be held on Wednesday October 26, at 4 p.m., at the MSAD17 Administrative Offices next to the High School. The aim is to inform folks about Farm to School projects and to engage those who want to support this work. The Forum will be followed at 5:30 by an optional tour of the kitchen and cafeteria at the High School. All are welcome.
