COLLEGES
The University of Maine field hockey team scored three times in the third quarter to beat Bryant University 6-3 in an America East game and earn their 10th straight win on Friday in Providence, Rhode Island.
The Black Bears improve to 12-3, 6-0 in the conference and are one win shy of the program record for consecutive wins. The mark of 11 straight was set in 2011.
Madisyn Hartley and Chloe Watson scored in the first quarter for Maine. Poppy Lambert added a second-quarter goal, while Tereza Holubcova, Lambert and Kate Richardson scored in the third.
Taryn Rauff scored twice, while Lotte Guitink scored one for Bryant (4-11, 0-6).
WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Grace Heiting scored twice as University of Maine (3-2) ripped off four straight goals to open the game to beat Long Island (1-4) 4-3 in Orono.
Ida Kuoppola and Cora Webber each had a goal for Maine. Jorden Mattison made 21 saves.
Megan Bouveur, Bri Eid and Sarah Rourke all scored one goal for LIU while Tindra Holm racked up 43 saves.
HOCKEY
NHL: Elmer Soderblom scored a third-period goal in his NHL debut, Ville Husso made 29 saves and the Detroit Red Wings won in Derek Lalonde’s first game as a head coach, beating the Montreal Canadiens 3-0 in Detroit.
Husso, acquired from St. Louis in a trade during the offseason, had his fourth shutout.
Michael Rasmussen had an empty-net goal and two assists. Olli Maatta also had an empty-netter.
• Steven Stamkos scored twice, and Corey Perry and Ross Colton each had a goal and an assist, as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 in Columbus, Ohio for their first win of the season.
Cal Foote also scored for the Lightning, and Vladislav Namestnikov, Alex Killorn and Mikhail Sergachev each added two assists. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 26 shots.
Johnny Gaudreau recorded his first goal since signing with the Blue Jackets in the offseason, and Gus Nyquist also scored for Columbus. Daniil Tarasov remained winless in seven NHL appearances, finishing with 34 saves.
BASKETBALL
NBA: O.G. Anunoby scored 32 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Toronto Raptors beat the Boston Celtics 137-134 in overtime in the final preseason game for both teams in Montreal.
Jaylen Brown scored 23 points, while Jayson Tatum had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Celtics, who open the regular season against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday. Tatum was ejected in the third quarter. Derrick White also had 23 points.
Scottie Barnes added 25 points for Toronto.
ROAD RACING
DOPING: Boston Marathon winner Diana Kipyokei of Kenya was suspended on Friday after testing positive for doping at the race and allegedly obstructing an investigation.
The Athletics Integrity Unit said Kipyokei’s sample after winning in October last year had traces of triamcinolone acetonide. It is a glucocorticoid prohibited at races when an athlete does not have permission to use it as a medication.
The case has deepened suspicions the substance is a doping product of choice for athletes from Kenya.
The AIU said 10 Kenyans have tested positive for triamcinolone since the start of 2021, with only two cases in athletics from the entire rest of the world in the same period.
In a second triamcinolone case revealed on Friday, Kenyan marathon runner Betty Wilson Lempus was also suspended while under investigation for doping and tampering.
Kipyokei is also under investigation for “obstructing or delaying the AIU’s investigation through the provision of false information or documentation.”
COLLEGES
MEN’S BASKETBALL: SWAC members Grambling State and Southern have been invited to play in the second NBA HBCU Classic at this season’s All-Star weekend in Salt Lake City.
The Feb. 18 game, which will precede All-Star Saturday night’s lineup featuring the NBA’s dunk contest, 3-point shootout and skills competition, will be shown on TNT, ESPN2 and NBA TV.
Last season’s inaugural game in Cleveland between Howard and Morgan State netted both schools $100,000 donations. Over the last two All-Star weekends, about $4 million has been raised to support students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and scholarship funds such as the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and United Negro College Fund.
SOCCER
PREMIER LEAGUE: England midfielder Phil Foden has signed a contract extension with Manchester City to 2027.
Foden’s previous deal was to expire in 2024 but the Premier League champion moved to secure its home-grown talent for longer.
He is the star graduate of City’s celebrated academy, which has become one of the most successful in world soccer.
Foden has seven goals in 13 games, including a hat trick in the 6-3 win against Manchester United this month.
GOLF
PGA TOUR: Rickie Fowler and Andrew Putnam were tied with a one-stroke lead after the second round of the Zozo Championship in Inzia City, Japan, where scores were low with drier conditions after rain in the first round.
Putnam had an 8-under 62 and Fowler was in at 63, putting both Americans at 10-under after two rounds at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club on the outskirts of Tokyo.
The low round with a 61 – and a course record – went to John Huh. The American was two strokes off the pace.
EUROPEAN TOUR: Ángel Hidalgo shot an 8-under 63 to grab part of a three-way lead of the Andalucía Masters in Sotogrande, Spain after two rounds.
The Spaniard sunk eight birdies on an error-free day at Valderrama to join overnight leader Min Woo Lee and Adrian Otaegui on 9 under par.
Joakim Lagergren was three shots back in fourth heading into the weekend.
LIV GOLF: Brooks Koepka took a two-shot lead at the LIV Golf Invitational-Jeddah in King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia after an 8-under 62 in the first round, matching the lowest score on the breakaway tour that has torn the world of golf in two.
The American made eight birdies during an error-free round at the Royal Greens Golf & Country Club in King Abdullah Economic City. His 62 equalled the lowest score this season after Lee Westwood hit the mark at Boston in September.
Koepka, a former top-ranked player and four-time major winner, was trailed by Charl Schwartzel at 6 under. Hideto Tanihara, Peter Uihlein and Patrick Reed were a further stroke back.
TENNIS
FIRENZE OPEN: Lorenzo Musetti put on another strong performance at his home tournament, beating Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semifinals in Florence, Italy.
The 20-year-old Musetti, who is ranked 28th and playing in his home region of Tuscany, will face top-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over eighth-seeded Brandon Nakashima, for a spot in the final of the indoor hard-court tournament.
Also, Swedish qualifier Mikael Ymer reached his third semifinal of the season and will next play American J.J. Wolf, into his first tour-level semifinal.
