A Lewiston resident is one of three women who will be honored by the University of Maine’s 12th annual Maryann Hartman Awards. Madeleine Giguere, who is well-known for celebrating the state’s Franco-American heritage, will receive the award Nov. 5 at the Wells Conference Center at the Orono campus with two others.

Giguere said she found out about her selection for the award in August. “I’m very honored,” she said. “I’m delighted to be one of the 36 women to have received this award.”

The recipients of the Hartman awards are selected, from nominations, by a committee of members of the Women’s Studies Program and the Women in the Curriculum organization. The awards honor Maine women whose work inspires and helps advance the status of women throughout the state.

Giguere, who is 72 years old Saturday, said she is keeping busy with a number of different projects, including the state commission to study Franco-American resources, a biography of fellow Mainer Charlotte Michaud, a literary project in the St. John Valley and a speech for the Franco-American Heritage Reading Room at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College. She also belongs to the Sociologists for Women in Society, a national organization.
