100 Years Ago: 1922

Skirt lengths — not at the knees, not on the ground — just sensible lengths seven inches from the shoe soles are recommended by members of the New York City Federation of Women’s Clubs, with a membership of more than 10,000.

50 Years Ago: 1972

(from a Journal photo) Such is the theme for the Portland Symphony Orchestra benefit dance to be held November 18 at the Martindale Country Club. Mrs. Jere Clifford of Alex Street, Lewiston, photographed here in Greek costume with her children, Alice, Anna Marie and Douglas, is the PSO chairman for the twin cities area and as such is coordinating plans for the Greek Gala which will feature Greek music, dancing, entertainment and those special Greek hor d’oeuvres.

25 Years Ago: 1997

The Village Coffeehouse in New Gloucester recently opened. Friday night concerts will be held the third Saturday of each month. Kicking off the season brought local resident Jim Gallant who has been delighting audiences all over New England with his unique guitar styling and introspective song writing and rich baritone vocals. Jim was featured last spring as a guest on the popular Massachusetts television show “Songwriters in the Round.”
