Richard Arthur Guay
TOGUS – Richard Arthur Guay, 82, passed away at the VA Hospital Hospice Thursday Oct. 27, 2022. He was born on June 19, 1940, the son of Albert and Elise (St. Pierre) Guay.
He served in the United States Navy from 1958-1961, having been assigned to Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in Norfolk, Va., and then served on the heavy cruiser USS Newport News CA 148 where he was a Petty Officer Third Class. He was a shipfitter metalsmith and his duties included damage control and firefighting, He joined the Lewiston Fire Department in February 1965 and retired in February of 1989 as Deputy Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief and served on every Fire Company in the Lewiston Fire Department during his career. He later became a Letter Carrier on Rural Route 25 with the Lewiston Post Office until his retirement 2003. In his retirement years, he volunteered as an election clerk and Warden of Ward 2 in Lewiston.
He graduated from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute with a degree of Associate in Applied Science in Fire Technology in May of 1976. He then received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocational Education, Summa Cum Laude in May of 1978 from the University of Southern Maine.
He completed his education at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD.
His hobbies were mountain climbing with his three sons who climbed all of the four thousand footer clubs in New Hampshire as well as many Maine peaks. He and his wife traveled extensively during retirement, having been on two trips across America as well as fall and winter vacations along the east coast from Cape Cod to Key West.
Survivors include his childhood Sweetheart, Therese (Berube) Guay whom he married on June 30, 1962; their sons, Mark Guay and wife Mary, Michael Guay and wife Cheryl, Matthew Guay and companion Kathy Tardif; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Roger and Jeannine Berube, cousins Lorraine and Rene Desrochers; five grandchildren Amanda, Packer, Sarah Crosby and Michael Guay. Jr., Gena and Nick Bickford; six great- grandchildren Kaedon, MacKenzie, Roman, Malachi, Lucas and Jude.
He was predeceased by three sisters Muriel Pleau, Bernice Bissonnette, and Yolande Sawyer, three brothers Normand, Raymond, and Gerald.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Veterans Hospital in Togus.
A Mass of Christian Burial honoring Richard’s life will be celebrated 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Holy Cross Church. Committal prayers will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to visit Tuesday Nov. 1, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Pinette Dillingham & Lynch Funeral Home 305 Alfred Plourde Parkway Lewiston.
