PARIS — On November 11 each year, our country pauses to acknowledge and thank those citizens who have selflessly served their country in one of the five branches of military service. Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938.
This year, Veterans Day federal holiday is being celebrated on November 11. The American Legion Foster Carroll Post #72 and the VFW Post #9787 in Paris are co-hosting the area’s annual recognition ceremony on that date at 10 a.m. at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. This year’s program features a special salute to area veterans. Our Oxford Hills community is extremely fortunate to have a remarkable number of former and current military members serving in all areas of public service, including law enforcement, fire and/or emergency rescue personnel capacity. The program will once again feature photos of area veterans from when they were in the service! If you have a photo you would like to include in the slide show, please send the photo with identifying information to the program coordinator at sarah@oxfordhillslaw.com. Photos may also be dropped off at Oxford Hills Law, 197 Park Street in Paris. Please include the veteran’s name, rank/rate, branch of service and period of time in the service.
