Maurice Louis Dubé
AUGUSTA – On Oct. 22, 2022, Maurice Louis Dubé, devoted husband and father, died at the age of 73, following a sudden battle against cancer.
Maurice, better known as “Moe” to many, was born in Lewiston on May 8, 1949, to Normand and Yvette (Filion) Dubé. He was educated at Ste. Croix and St. Dominic schools.
After being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968 and serving at Fort Hood, Texas, he attended Bates College and graduated with a degree in French Literature. It was at Bates that Moe also met his future wife, Anita Moulin of Auburn. After working briefly for the State of Maine as a workforce reintegration counselor, Moe transitioned to the Internal Revenue Service in Waterville and Augusta, where he spent 12 years. From there he joined the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in Augusta, where he was employed for over 27 years, going on to hold District Director positions for Missouri, Massachusetts, and finally back in Maine. Moe also served as a reserve officer in the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring in 1994 after 13 years of service.
Maurice Dubé was one of those rare men who had no enemies and whom one could not help but love. He was irrepressibly witty and observant, with a gift for quiet, self-deprecating humor and clever turns of phrase. Moe also had a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life, making friends anywhere and everywhere he went. In recent years, he and Anita lived part-time in The Villages in Florida, where he remained his outgoing, intellectually curious, and active self, and where he joyfully enlarged his circle of friends even further. No matter where he was in life, though, Moe remained proud of who he was and where he had come from. He was a profoundly humble man, who, in spite of his many natural gifts and hard-earned successes, always saw himself as nothing more—and nothing less—than “the short Frenchman from Lewiston, Maine.”
Moe leaves in mourning his loving wife of 49 years, Anita; sons Joseph and Daniel, of Montréal and Lewiston, respectively; brother Paul (Armande) Dubé of Collierville, Tenn.; and many cherished family and friends too innumerable to name.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Franco-American Heritage Center, 46 Cedar Street, Lewiston, Maine. Visiting hours with the family will follow in the center’s Heritage Hall until 6 p.m.
Arrangements are with The Fortin Group, 217 Turner Street, Auburn.
