To the Editor:

As members of the SAD 17 School Board decide on the proposed gender policy, I hope they listen to truly informed sources. After considering vocal public opinion from those who do not take care of our teens, I ask that they seek out the advice of those who do care for adolescents: Pediatricians, Family Practice providers, Counselors, Social Workers and others. We should be asking what is best for our children. We should not be swayed by strongly held, outdated or frankly harmful ideology.

The dilemma of how the schools deal with issues when parents and adolescents disagree is very difficult. The policy, as written, tries to thread this needle as best as one can. I applaud the authors of this policy who appear to be trying to do right by our teens.
