DEAR SUN SPOTS: Did you know the Sun Spots column will be 50 years old in December? It was started in December 1972 by Barbara Clune. I want to congratulate and thank you for proving that this column of advice, recommendations, recipes and wisdom has been an invaluable resource to me and countless readers over these 50 years. WOW! — David, Poland

ANSWER: Thank you for bringing that to my attention, David. Let’s celebrate! Readers, I would love it if you sent me your favorite Sun Spots moments. Scroll through your memory banks and see what you come up with.

How has Ms. Sun Spots helped you over the years? What do you like most about the column? If you could ask Ms. Sun Spots anything, what would it be?

I’ll take your letters, mix in my own recollections, and build a featured story that will appear in a Sunday edition in December.

Please write to sunspots@sunjournal.com. Include your first name, town, and your email address in case I need more information. The deadline is Nov. 22. I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: This is in response to the person looking for a cat carrier (Nov. 10 Sun Spots). I have a medium-size one he can borrow or keep. I can be reached at boomer1946@roadrunner.com or 689-4394. — Lucy, Lewiston

ANSWER: That’s so generous of you, Lucy. My understanding is that this is a big kitty and could need a large carrier, but I’m putting the information out there for our reader to see.

Someone else offered to loan out their large carrier and asked where the kitty and his owner were located so I have written back to the reader since he didn’t want to give out his name and location. It is a bit more challenging to do business this way but sometimes people want to protect their privacy and it’s still doable to get folks in Sun Spots Land in touch with each other in most cases. However, it’s best to at least divulge the town where you live when you are asking for an item or service or offering the same. We don’t want the cat or his person stressing out over this and I know I can count on Sun Spots readers to be kind and helpful.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have eyeglasses and hearing aids to give away. Are there any organizations that take these? — No name, Lewiston

ANSWER: The Lions Club will take both the eyeglasses and hearing aids, as well as cellphones. Most eye doctors and optical shops have a local Lions Club drop box in the waiting room, as do Walmart Vision Centers. These items are refurbished and offered to people who cannot otherwise afford them.

For more information about the Maine Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation, visit https://www.mainelions.org/mlshf  where there is an email form, PDF pamphlet, and an application for those who wish to apply for financial help with eyeglasses and hearing aids. The contact phone number is 613-7033. The email address is mainelionssightandhearing@gmail.com.

This column is for you, our readers. It is for your questions and comments. There are only two rules: You must write to the column and sign your name. We won’t use it if you ask us not to. Please include your phone number. Letters will not be returned or answered by mail, and telephone calls will not be accepted. Your letters will appear as quickly as space allows. Address them to Sun Spots, P.O. Box 4400, Lewiston, ME 04243-4400. Inquiries can also be emailed to sunspots@sunjournal.com.
