AUBURN — A pickup truck collided with a tractor-trailer Monday afternoon, blocking traffic for about an hour on Interstate 95.

Police and emergency crews responded to the two-vehicle crash at Exit 77 on the southbound side around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Maine State Police Spokesperson Shannon Moss said Richard Kammel, 70, of Sabattus was driving his gray 2011 Ford Ranger pickup truck when he struck the back of a tractor-trailer and flipped over. The pickup caught fire, but other drivers were able to put out the flames with fire extinguishers.

Kammel had to be extricated from his vehicle and was transported to Central Maine Medical Center with serious but not life-threatening injuries. The tractor-trailer’s driver was not injured. Sun glare was a factor in the accident, Moss said.

Both traffic lanes were closed and traffic backed up to about Exit 80 by the time a single lane was reopened around 4:30 p.m.
