John Cook

OLD ORCHARD BEACH – John Cook, 78, of Old Orchard Beach, passed away on Oct. 27, 2022. Terry, as he was known to most, was born in Memphis, Tenn. on May 11, 1944 to John and Ada Cook.

He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1962 and attended Maine Central Institute before enlisting in the Marine Corps, where he served with the 3rd Amtrac Bn. in Vietnam. After an honorable discharge in 1966, he pursued a career in data processing. After retirement, he managed Yvonne’s Car Wash in Saco.

Terry spent the last two decades of his life in Old Orchard Beach, reuniting with old friends and developing many new relationships that meant so much to him. Being on the golf course was his happy place. He loved the game and approached it with intensity, always studying and analyzing. This same “all in” approach was evident as he enjoyed many other interests. It accounted for him having the most moves in his fantasy football league, for making spreadsheets to dissect Scrabble game results, and for the hours spent with music he loved, making CDs or researching bands his son was following.

He loved the beach and bird watching at Carol’s house, was fascinated with kite flying, wrote meaningful and often times amusing poetry, and was very proud to be a Marine. “Oorah”

He is survived by his sons, John and James; his close special friend and companion, Carolyn Sacks; his sister, Peg Johnson and her husband Bill and their children, Mark and Julie.

Also, he leaves behind his beloved cats, Pookie and Kit Kat.

At his request there will be no service. Family and friends will gather on the beach in the summer to celebrate his life.

Arrangements by Hobbs Funeral Home, Scarborough.
