100 Years Ago: 1922

The one-act farce, “Twelve Old Maids,” given by Minot Corner grange members for evening packed the hall to capacity, a great many coming from Lewiston and Auburn. It was an appreciative audience, too, and the local hits introduced, the ridiculous costumes, and the humor of the play itself, kept the audience applauding and laughing. Mrs. Flora Pulsifer as Eliza Neff was especially good in her take-offs. Mrs. George H. Rowe as Liza Pearl made a very charming young girl after she had taken the Everbloom which transformed her from a hired girl to a blossoming young lady in a picture hat. Her waltz after the happy surprise had taken place, was very pretty.

50 Years Ago: 1972

(from Journal photos) A driver best be on his toes and brake pedal. The new traffic patterns and traffic signals necessitated by opening of the new bridge between Lewiston and Auburn, via Boxer Island, has been followed by several near misses, and the new controls take some motorists by surprise. At left is the rotary at the end of the Auburn side of the bridge, some motorists about to cross Center Street, as others come onto Center from the Auburn approach. There’s a very short yellow light on Center Street, causing some motorists on Center to get caught in the intersection on red, and others to come to an abrupt halt, making them susceptible to a rear-end jolt. At right is another at least temporarily tricky area, one of the two where there are opposite exits – entrances from Center Street to the busy shopping areas on each side of the highway. The area is under study, and will be for some time, before a permanent control system is adopted. In the meantime, take care…

25 Years Ago: 1997

The Auburn Police Department is distributing free police trading cards at the Auburn Police Station. On this week’s card is Patrol Officer Jason D. Moen, who has been on the force for two years and is assigned to the Patrol Division. He studied business and economics at the University of Maine in Farmington. He is a member of the Shawnee Peak Ski Patrol. Auburn Police Department members will give cards during activities at library, school and lunch programs.
