Motorists traveling through Falmouth should anticipate occasional nighttime road closures in the next three years as the Maine Department of Transportation replaces bridges that carry Bucknam and Johnson roads over Interstate 295.

Work on the Bucknam Road overpass started in September and will continue into 2024. Work on the Johnson Road overpass has yet to begin. Both bridges are expected to be completed by the end of 2025, the department said in a statement.

Built in 1960, the bridges are being replaced by Wyman & Simpson Inc. of Richmond at a cost of $19.6 million.

Starting Sunday, occasional full closures of Bucknam Road, between the I-295 northbound and southbound ramps, will occur Sunday through Saturday between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Lane closures are permitted Sunday through Thursday between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Full closures of I-295, northbound and/or southbound, will occur Monday through Saturday between 1 and 5 a.m. Any full closures of the interstate will be limited to 25 minutes. Detour routes will be clearly posted.

Nightly lane closures on both the northbound and southbound sides of I-295 will occur Sunday through Thursday between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Single lane closures on Friday nights will only be permitted on the southbound side of the interstate between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Saturday.
