BETHEL — In the spirit of Christmas, an anonymous donor walked into C.N. Brown Energy saying they wanted to fill a few oil tanks for people in need.

Employee Abbie Kain at the company office on Parkway Road said they received a “decent lump sum” from the donor who wanted the fuel to go to “elderly, widows, people that are really struggling.” It was to be one delivery for each person.

Five C.N. Brown employees chose customers in Woodstock, Greenwood and Gilead.

“There was a person having a hard time in Berlin (New Hampshire) so we sent some money up that way, too,” Kain said.

Kain’s manager, Mindy Litchfield, of Woodstock went with the delivery driver.

“Two people cried when they heard,” Kain said. “They were very, very pleased. Another person said they were going to pay it forward. Those three really touched my heart.”

One of the recipients happened to come to the office to order oil. The staff decided to tell them that they were one of the recipients.

“Their mother had passed away,” Kain said. “They said it couldn’t have happened at a better time. Because they are hurting for money. So, of course, I cried because they cried.”

Each recipient received up to 100 gallons. Because of a price drop, two people were able to pass on what they couldn’t use. So the initial six recipients turned into eight.

“Today is what the holidays are all about,” Litchfield wrote on the company’s Facebook Page.
