Mystery Photo for Jan. 1, 2023. Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal

Mystery Photo for Dec. 25, 2022. Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal

We had a lot of correct answers for last week’s Mystery Photo taken in the lower level of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Lewiston. Several mentioned it being in the area that was once part of the lower church that has been recently repurposed into a smaller chapel, event hall, kitchen prep area, and storage with more plans for future development. Several readers, including our winner Louise Michaud of Lewiston, knew the setup was for the recent celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe, also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe. In Roman Catholicism, in 1531 the Virgin Mary appeared before an Aztec man who had converted to Christianity and she requested a shrine be built to her in an area that is now a suburb of Mexico City. The local archbishop was unconvinced of the man’s story until the man, guided by the Virgin Mary, brought the archbishop dozens of Castilian roses not known to grow in that area and the image of Mary was discovered to be imprinted on the inside of the man’s cloak, which is now enshrined in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. Louise was chosen the winner in a random drawing from all the correct entries and will receive a $20 Hannaford supermarket gift card.
