I’m writing about the idea of developing the Martel school into housing for seniors.

This project was approved over a year ago; Avesta Housing and Lewiston Housing were working together. They had received an affordable housing program award from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston.

The city signed an option on a purchase and sale agreement, and it goes on and on.

Martel is now an empty building, and the Planning Board is waiting to make recommendations.

I have been following this for a year now. Lewiston needs Martel school to be converted to senior housing, which is very much needed in this area. Most of our senior places are outdated and old, and there are not enough of them.

I urge the City Council to rethink this project and go forward with  it. We old folks have worked a long time and paid taxes, and we need an affordable and nice place to live.

Since the City Council shares a love for our great city of Lewiston, I hope its members share the love with us seniors.
