I want to bring this to the attention of seniors in Lewiston. Recently the Lewiston City Council didn’t renew the senior housing project proposed for Martel School.
The Lewiston Planning Board had two meetings to review the situation. At the second meeting its members discussed the proposal to sell the property. They discussed the price offer for the property as well as the cost to the city to remove the asbestos and all the materials from the demolition.
Then they opened the meeting for comments from the public. When I was able to speak I said the numbers are important, such as how many people are on the waiting for senior housing.
After others spoke, they asked the head of the Lewiston Housing Authority how many are waiting on the waiting list. He told them about 1,600 people.
The Planning Board voted unanimously to recommend that the City Council approve the Martel School be developed for senior housing.
The council plans to have this issue on its agenda for the Tuesday, March 7 meeting.
We need seniors, relatives and others to attend the meeting to show strong support for the Martel School senior housing project, because it is greatly needed.
I think people should also contact City Council members.
