Eleanor Herrick

AUBURN – Eleanor Herrick, a beloved resident of Auburn, Maine, passed away peacefully on Feb. 15, 2023, at the age of 89. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a woman who lived life with kindness and tenaciousness. Born and raised in Freeport, Maine, with her six siblings, Pam, Pauline, Joan, Carol, Butch, and Kenneth, Eleanor was a lifelong resident of the state and everything it represents from the woods and wildflowers to the birds and winter snow. She grew up on a farm and brought this love with her when she left home. Eleanor adored her home farm on Jordan School Road, especially her sheep and her Jersey heifers. Eleanor was a proud member of her community, and she will be remembered fondly as an avid square dancer, poll worker, seamstress, gardener, and animal advocate. In her younger years she could often be found in her flower gardens or in her sewing room with her spaniel Tippy. In her later years, she sewed square dance skirts with her boxer Callie alongside, and traveled. She was an accomplished gardener, enjoying the beauty and variety of her flowers and the bounty of her vegetable gardens. Above all was Eleanor’s love for her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, always making time for gatherings. She passed on her appreciation for nature, animals, wood walks, swimming, and camping to her children, just as she shared her passion for books. Eleanor is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Robert, and her nine children: Linda Stearns (Dave) of Appleton, Gary Herrick (Sue) of Auburn, Ronald Herrick (Ann) of Sabattus, and Danny Herrick (Marie) of Auburn, Sharon Bergeron (Jean) of Hebron, Patti Barry (Danny) of Poland, Christina Lavers (John) of Wales, Alison Dehetre (Glenn) of Mechanic Falls, and Helen Peppe (Eric) of Buxton. She considered herself blessed to have 23 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clara and Owen Whitten, her brother Owen “Butch”, her sister Pam, and by her beloved grandchildren Adrienne, Randy, and Rebecca.

A celebration of Eleanor’s life will be held at 12:30 p.m., on March 5, at the Auburn Methodist Church at 439 Park Avenue in Auburn.

The family would like to thank St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion and Androscoggin Hospice House for their care and compassion.

The family requests that donations be made to The Alzheimer’s Foundation, http://www.alzfdn.org, in Eleanor’s memory.
