Harold W. Shanning Sr.
LEWISTON – Harold W. Shanning Sr., “Buddy”, 77, of West Poland passed away on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, at Central Maine Medical Center with his loving wife and family by his side. He was born July 7, 1945, in Lewiston, son of the late Victor Shanning and Mildred (Tirrell) McDonald. He married the love of his life Nancy Bennett on July 17, 1966.
While he had a variety of jobs during his life, he spent most of his time employed at Robinson Manufacturing in Oxford for 25 years and Poland Community School for 14 years, where he retired from in 2015.
His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. Buddy could be found mowing, gardening, hunting, fishing, working on his Kubota tractor, or helping out in the orchard. He had an infectious laugh and larger than life personality which caused him to easily make friends wherever he went. Buddy was a staple in his community and truly cared about his neighbors and their wellbeing.
Buddy was predeceased by his loving parents, Victor Shanning and Mildred McDonald, brother, Donald McDonald, sisters, Sharon Pond, and Donna Knightly who passed 23 hours after Buddy’s death, and his canine friend, Baxter.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 56 years, Nancy Shanning, his daughter Jennifer Mayhan and her husband John, his son Harold Shanning Jr. and his wife Shannon, his beloved granddaughters Nicole Mayhan and Anna Shanning, sister Marilyn Newman, brother in-laws Richard Pond and Fred Knightly as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves beloved friends including Bruce Butler who could frequently be found sitting at his kitchen table, drinking coffee, and his cat KC.
In keeping with Buddy’s wishes all services are at the convenience of the family, arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Home and Cremation Services 26 W. Dwinal St., Mechanic Falls.
