The majority of the Lewiston City Council has, once again, shown that they are more concerned with punishing those who disagree with them than with actually governing.
Their Feb. 21 censure of Mayor Carl Sheline for something that was never even done was nothing more than flexing their political muscle to try to show that only their will can be done. Councilor Rick LaChapelle seemed to take issue when asked why a draft letter that was never sent is censure-worthy, and he equated it to a draft proposal being criticized earlier in the year.
I must have missed when the council censured him for that draft. Because that is the only reason it would make sense for him to bring it up. Otherwise it would just look extremely petty and shows that they are finding reasons to punish those they disagree with.
I am beyond tired of the majority of this council refusing to listen to their constituents, installing their own agenda, and hypocritically fighting anyone who opposes it. If they’re really concerned with drafts being censurable offenses, then they should censure any member of the council who has withdrawn a proposal.
Or, preferably, instead of finding ways to punish people, they actually work for the betterment of our city.
With the current majority, that may be a tall order.
