Isaac W. Dyer

Isaac W. DyerB1946 – 2023BWINTHROP – On March 6, 2023, Isaac W. Dyer, a lifelong Winthrop resident passed away.

Most people knew him as Ike. He was born March 24, 1946. He grew up in Winthrop, where he attended Winthrop High School. He graduated from University of Maine Orono in 1968 where he studied math and education. Ike had a long devotion to students and communities in Maine. He taught in the Hampden and Winthrop school systems before settling in at Cony High School. Ike then moved into administration and became principal in Rangeley, Whitefield, and finally Buckfield. After retirement, he devoted his time to the Winthrop School Board and served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Connected Credit Union.

Ike was previously married and predeceased by Linda Smith Dyer and previously married to Sally Perry. Ike and Linda raised twin boys – Isaac (Skip) and Eric (Rick). He was a devoted father who enjoyed coaching and watching their events.

A lifelong outdoor enthusiast, Ike would often be found hunting, fishing, or canoeing with his sons, friends, and various dogs. He had a love for the fields, forests, and waters of the State of Maine and passed this passion along to his sons and grandchildren. Two of Ike’s favorite pastimes were reading and playing cards. He always had a book in his back pocket and he loved playing cards with friends and family – an offer of a cribbage match was never turned down. Ike was generous to a fault and was always willing to help a friend and never missed an opportunity to tell a great joke.

In his later years, his love for his grandchildren was boundless – he loved nothing more than to attend plays, and school or sporting events, watching their accomplishments with pride. He also enjoyed traveling after retirement.

Having lived his entire life in Winthrop, Ike was the source of all local knowledge for his high school classmates. He attended nearly all class lunches, hearing and telling numerous stories.

His friendships through the years were deep and long lasting, He always enjoyed his time with his great high school friends Dan Auclair and his wife Judy, as well as Gary Howard and his wife Joanne. His friendships with Ron Kenoyer, his wife Pam, Frank Southard, his wife Ethel, and Jeff Trundy were born from their time at Cony High and extend to today, as does his great fondness for Thuy Pham, Khoi Tran, Khoa Tran and his family. As well, his friendship with Jim Nelson, his wife Linda, was formidable and they are sure to be “cutting for deal” on the cribbage board, even now.

Ike was predeceased by his mother Helen (Hamlin), father Isaac W. and brother James.

He is survived by his son Skip, daughter-in-law Julie, and grandsons, Paul, Lyndan and Connor, and his son Rick, daughter-in-law Jane, granddaughter Helen (Hallie) and grandson Samuel. As well, he is survived by his nephew Jamison (Brodie) and nieces, Emily and Elizabeth.

A special note of gratitude goes to Brodie for his love and devotion in the final years of Ike’s life.
