Dr. Clifton D. Gray, president of Bates College spoke on Maine at the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Friday giving substantially the address which he gave to the Maine club of New York, several weeks ago. The address created a distinct impression upon the club. Dr. Gray very kindly substituted at the last minute for a speaker who was unable to come and both his kindness in doing so and the merits of his speech were deeply appreciated.

The first annual Lost Valley canoe race will feature the closing day of the Auburn ski area March 18 as the Valley plans a full day of activities to bring the local ski season to a climactic end.

Fern Pontbriand, manager of the area, said Friday night that a special award will be presented to the winner of the event. According to Pontbriand, the canoe race will be the last event of the day, scheduled to start at 4 p.m. The event will be a combination “down the mountain and white water” event as the course will take the two-man teams down Squirrel Run Trail, then into the brook running along the floor of the valley to the finish line on the brook. It is unofficially – but reliably reported – that ski patrolmen will be strategically located along the course.

Otto Wallingford, proprietor of the ski resort, will be race chairman, and Pontbriand said Friday night there already are entries and one of them has been busy hot-waxing the bottom of his canoe to get it ready for the big event.

The big canoe race will be only one of the many events scheduled at the Valley for closing day, with several other races and contests on tap.
