100 Years Ago: 1923

A woman for the first time in the history of Maine, presided over the deliberations of the house of representatives on Friday morning. Mrs. Dora B. Pinkham, representative from Fort Kent, was called to the chair by Speaker Holley, very early in the session. She was escorted to the speakers’ desk by Messenger Hayes amid the applause of her male associates. As presiding officer, Mrs. Pinkham conducted herself in the same careful manner, which has characterized her work thruout the session, and demonstrated her familiarity with parliamentary procedure.

50 Years Ago: 1973

ONE FOR ME AND TWO FOR EWE? – Five-year-old Elizabeth Hodgkins got a belated birthday gift Thursday, when this family pet ewe gave birth to triplets, something that every ewe doesn’t do! The breed has only the capability to nurse two babies at a sitting, so number three really will need a little help from friends. Elizabeth, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hodgkins of Dillingham Road, Auburn, will have a lot to talk about at the Court Street Baptist Church kindergarten, which she attends.

25 Years Ago: 1998

A groundbreaking ceremony for the high school/middle school project is scheduled for noon Thursday, March 19, at the project site near the intersection of routes 11 and 26, in Poland, according to School Union 29 superintendent Dr. Robert Wall. The event is open to the public and will be attended by school officials and project representatives, including personnel from Granger Northern of Portland. Granger Northern has begun project work on the site.
