State police are investigating what caused a vehicle to crash into a house in Madawaska on Saturday night, leaving two people dead.
The driver of the vehicle and a resident inside the house both died in the accident, state police said Sunday.
State police have not yet named the victims, but Madawaska Police Chief Ross Dubois told the Bangor Daily News that the driver was Shawn Cote, 47, of Madawaska, and the resident was David Morin, 71.
The owner of a local restaurant said Sunday that Morin was a regular customer.
“We’re in shock,” said Helen Fortin, who owns Chez Helen. “I just can’t believe it. We’re going to miss him terribly. He was a very nice man. He came in every morning for breakfast.”
The vehicle was traveling on 19th Avenue when the crash happened around 8:30 p.m. The home is located at the intersection of 19th Avenue and Bellevue Street, police said.
