Connor Doherty scored 2:02 into overtime, lifting the Maine Mariners to a 4-3 win over Tulsa in an ECHL game on Friday.

Tag Bertuzzi forced overtime with a third-period goal for Tulsa, which opened a 2-0 lead with first-period goals from Dante Sheriff and Bertuzzi.

The Mariners responded with second-period goals from Austin Albrecht, Alex-Olivier Voyer and Carter Johnson to take a 3-2 lead.

Francois Brassard made 30 saves for Maine while Riley Morris has 28 stops for the Oilers.

GOLF

MASTERS: Aaron Wise has withdrawn from the Masters, posting on social media that he needs time away to focus on his mental health. He will not be replaced in the field, which now is 88 players.

“Golf is just as much a mental game as it is one of physical skill, and the mental piece of it has been a struggle for me recently,” Wise posted on Instagram. “I don’t take the significance of playing at Augusta lightly, but I know that I need to take some time away to focus on my mental health so I can get back to competing at a level I am proud of.”

Wise has not played the Masters since his only trip in 2019, when he qualified by winning the AT&T Byron Nelson the year before. He won one match but didn’t make it out of group play at the Dell Match Play last week. He had missed the cut in four of his previous five tournaments.

PGA: Patrick Rodgers took a step toward his first PGA Tour victory on Friday in San Antonio, shooting a 5-under 67 to take a three-stroke lead midway through the second round of the weather-delayed Valero Texas Open.

Rodgers, who finished his opening-round 66 on Friday morning, birdied four of the final five holes in his second round at TPC San Antonio to post 11-under 133. Corey Conners, the 2019 winner in San Antonio, was 8 under after a 72. Michael Thompson shot 68 and was another shot behind.

LIV: Sebastian Munoz opened with an eagle and it only got better from there, leading the Colombian to a 9-under 62 and a two-shot lead Friday at LIV Golf-Orlando.

Richard Bland, the 50-year-old from England, had a 64. Four-time major champion Brooks Koepk and Danny Lee were at 65.

BASKETBALL

NBA: LaMarcus Aldridge announced Friday he is retiring again from the NBA after he initially retired in 2021 with an irregular heartbeat. He rejoined the Nets five months after announcing his retirement.

The seven-time All-Star was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome — an abnormality that can cause a rapid heartbeat — as a rookie in 2007. Despite the diagnosis, Aldridge, 37, was among his era’s premier big men. As the second pick out of Texas in the 2006 draft, he averaged 19.1 points and 8.1 rebounds in his career.

Aldridge played his first nine seasons with the Portland Trailblazers before five years with the San Antonio Spurs and his short time with the Nets.

• The NBA fined Minnesota center Rudy Gobert $25,000 and Coach Chris Finch $15,000 on Friday for their public criticisms of the officiating after their last game.

• Minnesota center Naz Reid has been sidelined indefinitely with a broken left wrist.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Buffalo upgraded its secondary depth by signing free agent safety Taylor Rapp to a one-year contract on Friday.

Listed at 6-feet and 208 pounds, Rapp has nine interceptions in 57 career games, including 48 starts, during four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams.

• John Brockington, a former All-Pro fullback who ranks fourth on the Green Bay Packers’ career rushing list, has died. He was 74. He was the first running back in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons.

• Chicago re-signed backup quarterback Nathan Peterman to a one-year contract.

FENCING

EVENT CANCELED: A fencing World Cup in France was canceled on Friday after the international governing body voted to let Russians compete.

The French Fencing Federation said it would not host the men’s Challenge Monal epee tournament near Paris in May following the International Fencing Federation’s decision this month to end the year-long exclusion of competitors from Russia and its ally Belarus due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The decision led to a backlash when more than 300 fencers signed a letter of protest and the organizers of another World Cup in Germany withdrew as hosts.

TENNIS

MIAMI OPEN: Daniil Medvedev hasn’t won a title in the U.S. since capturing the 2021 U.S. Open, when he turned away Novak Djokovic’s bid for a Grand Slam.

Now the Miami Open’s No. 4 seed is one victory from a fresh American title, beating fellow Russian Karen Khachanov 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals Friday. In the other men’s semifinal, top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz lost to Jannik Sinner in three sets.

Medvedev has won 23 of his last 24 matches – the lone loss to now-world No. 1 Alcaraz – and is in his fifth straight final.

Also Friday, No. 15 seed Petra Kvitova beat unseeded Sorana Cirstea 7-5, 6-3 in the second women’s semifinal and will face the red-hot Elena Rybakina in the final.

JURISPRUDENCE

PISTORIUS DENIED PAROLE: Former Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius was denied parole Friday and will have to stay in prison for at least another year and four months after it was decided that he had not served the “minimum detention period” required to be released following his murder conviction for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp 10 years ago.

The parole board ruled that Pistorius would only be able to apply again in August 2024, South Africa’s Department of Corrections said in a short, two-paragraph statement. It was released soon after a parole hearing at the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre prison where Pistorius is being held.
