CLINTON, N.Y. — Bates College held off a fourth-quarter rally by Hamilton to win 12-10 on the road in NESCAC women’s lacrosse action Saturday.

The Bobcats (5-7, 1-6 NESCAC) built a 12-6 lead with 7:37 left in the fourth, but the Continentals (4-7, 1-6) scored three goals over the next two and a half minutes to make it 12-9. However, they only netted more goal, with 1:32 left.

Shelby Howard scored a goal in each period to lead Bates’ attack. The Bobcats’ leading scorer, Caroline Taggart, added her 24th and 25th goals of the season.

Aine Cleary paced Hamilton with four goals, while Sarah Creamer scored two.

MEN’S LACROSSE
HAMILTON 15, BATES 6: Will Heher, Tim Sommer and Justin Pearl each scored three goals to boost the Continentals (5-5, 3-4 NESCAC) past the Bobcats (1-9, 0-7) in Lewiston.

Rowan Brumbaugh and Torben Wunderie each added a pair of goals for Hamilton, which scored 13 of its 15 in the first two quarters.

Malcom Klingbeil led Bates with three goals.

SOFTBALL
BATES SWEEPS: Madison Hollis’ complete-game shutout and big hitting performance highlighted the Bobcats’ (10-6, 4-2 NESCAC) sweep of the Cardinals (10-14, 0-6) in Middletown, Connecticut.

Bates won the opener 5-0, then took the second game 9-4.

Hollis (3-2) struck out seven and allowed seven hits over seven innings in the first game. She also had a hit and drove in a run.

Shortstop Ella Maher drove in two runs for the Bobcats, and Cassidy Musco, Grace Householter and Katherine Merisotis had two hits apiece. Musco, Householter and Kennedy Jones each belted a double.

In the second game, the Bates offense turned 11 singles into nine runs. Hollis, playing first base, led the charge with three hits and three RBIs. Musco had two this and scored twice.

Delaney Rankin (2-1) pitched another complete game for the Bobcats, striking out three and scattering seven hits and four runs over seven innings.

THOMAS TAKES TWO FROM UMF: The Terriers (10-8) blanked the Beavers (2-11) in the first game of a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader, then broke the bats out to cap off the twinbill with a five-inning victory in Farmington.

Thomas swept University of Maine at Farmington in its home openers by scores of 7-0 and 18-4.

Kelsie Currier pitched a complete game shutout for Thomas, scattering two hits and two walks. She also scored three times on Maddie Rock at-bats while also collecting three hits and an RBIs.

Lewiston graduate Bella Miller mustered one of the Beavers’ two hits, and Carleigh Schievink went the distance in the circle.

The Terriers scored 11 runs in the top of the first inning in the second game. Megan Oberholzer had two of her three hits in the frame, with both bringing home runs.

Miller again recorded one of UMaine-Farmington’s two hits against Thomas pitching, singling home Gray-New Gloucester grad Chelsea Davis in the Beavers’ four-run fifth.

BASEBALL
BOBCATS SPLIT: Bates opened its doubleheader in Lewiston with a 7-4 win, but suffered a 23-4 loss in the second game against Colby.

The Bobcats (10-9, 1-5 NESCAC) pulled away in the first game with a three-run fourth that provided them with a 7-3 lead. Christopher Cimino and Tyler Attal each singled in a run, and Henry Jamieson walked with the bases loaded.

Cimino had a game-high three hits, including a double, drove in two runs and scored twice. Attal had a double, a single, a run and two RBIs.

Bates starter Sam Hough (1-1) earned the win. He struck out three and allowed five hits and four runs in five innings. Jack Potash pitched the final two innings and notched his first save.

Mules starter Thomas Rioux (2-2) took the loss.

Cole Palmeri led Colby’s offense with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.

The Mules (13-6, 2-3 NESCAC) opened the second game with eight runs over the first two innings and then finished off the rout with 14 runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

Ryan Grace and Marcus Forrester each scored four runs for Colby, and Palmeri and Patrick McConnell tallied a team-high three hits apiece.

Joe Sylvester (2-1) started and earned the win for the Mules, while Bates’ Max Dio (3-2) took the loss.

Cimino, Attal and Jack Brennan each had a double and two hits for the Bobcats. Attal also drove in two runs and Cimino scored two.

CMCC DOMINATES OWLS: The Mustangs (19-10) ended their eight-game losing streak with a pair of high-scoring wins over UMaine-Presque Isle (1-18) in a doubleheader in Auburn.

Jimmy Reed’s four hits and four RBIs paced Central Maine Community College to an 18-4 win in the first game. Brandon Gour added three hits, while Avery MacWhinnie drove in three runs and Mountain Valley graduate Colton Frisbie brought in two runs.

Mustangs pitcher Shane Sullivan struck out five in six innings to earn the win.

Kaleb Thompson (three hits) and Zach Mann (three RBIs) led CMCC to a 10-2 win in the second game. Frisbie added two hits and Craig Burnette drove in two runs.

Garrett Harvey earned the win and struck out seven in six innings.

UMF SWEPT BY THOMAS: The Terriers’ (7-11) bats were on full display in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader sweep of the Beavers (3-15) in Farmington.

Thomas took the conference opener 10-5 before completing the sweep with a 12-0 victory to deny University of Maine at Farmington a win in its first two home games.

The Beavers fell behind 9-0 in the first game before scoring when Danny Terhune singled in two runs in the fifth. Oxford Hills graduate Hunter LaBossiere doubled home two more runs in the seventh before Ryan Sargent sent LaBossiere across the plate to round out the scoring.

Aaron Young and Reid Gagnon pounded out three hits apiece for Thomas.

Young then homered, drove in two runs and scored three times in the second game. Matt Seymour and Nick Hutson collected three hits each.

Oxford Hills grad Jonny Pruett had one of the Beavers’ three hits.
