Royce Earle Coburn
GREENE – Royce Earle Coburn, 81, passed peacefully to our Lord and savior at home on Easter morning April 9, 2023, with his loving wife and family by his side. He died from complications of pulmonary fibrosis.
Born in Bingham, Maine, on June 6, 1941, he was the son of Ralph Winthrop Coburn and Ruth Thompson Austin. He attended schools in Bingham, Lewiston, Berlin, NH and Dixfield. After high school, he spent eight years in the Air Force as a medic. He came home to Maine to attend nursing school at Central Maine General Hospital in Lewiston, graduating in 1972. After working two years as an RN in the Emergency Room at CMG (now CMMC), he attended Nurse Anesthesia school, graduating from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia in 1976. He gave anesthesia as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at St. Mary’s from 1976 to 1988, also serving as the Director of the school for a time. In 1988, he started at CMMC, where he continued his practice until retirement in 2007. He continued his military time as a Captain in the Army Reserve from 1990 to 1994. His love of this country and his patriotism were present in everything he did. He felt deeply honored to have served under President John Kennedy and President George H.W. Bush.
On April 15, 1972, he married the love of his life, Lesley Davis in South Freeport. They were married one week shy of 51 years and had two children who he was extremely proud of. He was also very proud to be the father of two other children, grandfather of seven and great grandfather of six. Spending time with his family was the most important thing in his life, and he spent many years volunteering in youth organizations in Auburn including Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Little League and the ELHS Music Association. He and Lesley chaperoned many events and trips and have many other “kids” who still call them Mom and Dad Coburn. They will always treasure that.
Roy was very community minded and loved the years he spent on the Auburn Planning Board, serving as its chairman for two mayors. He loved the City of Auburn and was proud to be part of the progress that the city made. He and Lesley would make a “date” out of touring Auburn to visit potential building sites that were coming before the board and loved seeing these projects to their completion.
Roy loved having family time, reading, biking, watching and feeding “his” birds, riding his Harleys, camping seasonally at Dummers Beach Campground in Weld for 20 plus years, spending winters in Naples, Fla. for 14 years, playing pickleball, travelling and going to the many events of his grandchildren. There was no one prouder in the audience or on the sidelines. The past 21 years in their home on Sabattus Pond have been beautiful and very peaceful. On the day before his passing, he welcomed the opening of the ice from the lake and the return of his ducks. Many gorgeous sunrises were shared at his favorite place on earth.
Surviving are his wife Lesley; children Christopher Coburn (Tracy), Rebecca Mastrianno, Shawn Donald, Scott Bryant (Monica), and special “daughter” great niece Jessica Couto; grandchildren Jada and Aubrey Coburn, Rocco and Gianna Mastrianno, Kimme Cox, Blaine Bryant and Chance Hooper; seven great-grandchildren; brother Arthur and several nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Robert and Roger.
The funeral service will be held Saturday April 22, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Pathway Vineyard Church, 9 Foss Road, Lewiston Maine, where he attended church.
