SUMNER – Susan Litchfield died Friday, April 14, 2023 at her home in Sumner with her family, as she had wished.

She was born in Norway on Jan. 3, 1944, to the late Wilber “Skip” and Evelyn Ellingwood Chamberlain. The family, which included her siblings Graydon and Lavinia, lived in West Paris for many years.

In 1968 she married Larry Litchfield, joining her children Karen and Joe with his children Larry, Jr. and Gary. The birth of their son, Bill, rounded out the mix, and they settled in Sumner in a neighborhood of Litchfields.

Susan made many lifelong friends while working at Penleys in West Paris for many years, and then at SAD #39, later RSU #10. She retired from work in 2014, but the friendships have remained. You all know who you are and you know that your friendship was treasured.

She was one of the group which founded Tri-Town Rescue and remained on the governing board until the unit disbanded. Her skill and compassion made her an excellent EMT as well as the family medical consultant. Susan was one of those people who are natural caregivers: a child, the elderly, a friend, a stranger in need, she cared for them and about them.

Susan is survived by her children, Larry and his wife Kim, Gary and his companion Debbie, Karen and her husband Bill Heald, Bill and his wife Jen, and daughter-in-law, Judy Allen; her aunts Beryl Oja and Susie Abbott; her brother-in-law, Wally Litchfield, sister-in-law, Linda and her husband Don Richardson, Jr., sisters-in-law Ruth Chamberlain, Deb Litchfield and Gloria Litchfield; a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins, too many to name.

She was predeceased by her husband, Larry; her son, Joseph; her sister, Lavinia and her brother, Graydon.

The family wishes to express thanks to Androscoggin Home Health Services, whose assistance enabled the family to keep her at home, and to Katie her home health aide.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris. Online condolences may be shared with her family at http://www.chandlerfunerals.com

Those who wish to remember Susan in a special way may donate to the Sumner Fire Department Auxiliary or to the charity of their choice.
