Geraldine (Cox) Mendelson
RANDOLPH, Mass. – Geraldine (Cox) Mendelson of Randolph, Mass. died peacefully on April 21 at the age of 99, three months short of her 100th birthday. Born in Edmunds, Maine, she was orphaned at the age of 4. She and her three sisters Dorothy, Geneva, and Zelda, were raised by her step-grandparents in Dennysville.
After graduating from high school at the age of 15, Geri trained as a registered nurse in Belfast and worked at Belfast Hospital. She married the late William “Bae” Mendelson in 1950 and became a full-time homemaker after the birth of her daughter Lecia in 1954. The young family moved to Lewiston in 1956 where two sons Isaac (Bob) and Mark joined the family. She was a compassionate, protective and loving mother to her three children. When they finished school and left for college, she studied to become a Certified Medical Records librarian and resumed working. She absolutely loved her new found career.
She and her husband moved from Maine to Randolph, Mass. in 1981 to be closer to her now adult children who all lived in Massachusetts. She worked at Golden Living Center for 28 years until the age of 89 when she finally retired. Her time was taken up with gardening, knitting, reading, meticulous maintenance of her home, entertaining family during holidays and she adored providing a home, at different times, for three of her grandchildren. She cherished her two great-grandsons whom she cared for two days a week. She thoroughly enjoyed playing games with them and fervently loving them. She eventually moved to South Dennis, Mass., into the home of her daughter and son-in-law Tony where she lived with Lecia’s loving assistance for the past three years.
Nana, as she was known to her family, will be remembered for her fierce self- reliance, her lavish holiday meals, her self-deprecating, dry humor, her altruistic love and kindness toward her children grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their families.
She was predeceased by her three sisters and husband. She is survived by her daughter Lecia Rando and her husband Tony, son Bob and his wife Patti and son Mark and his wife Judy; granddaughters Jahnaa Scully and her husband Tom, Chloe, Adrienne and Victoria Mendelson, grandsons Ben and Kyle Mendelson; great-grandsons Oliver and Hudson Scully; and many nieces and nephews.
Burial service will be private at Sharon Memorial Park. All are welcome to a gathering to honor Geri’s memory to be held on Tuesday, April 25 at her granddaughter’s house, 57 Church St., Canton, Mass. from 4 to 8 p.m.
