POLAND — The Select Board learned Tuesday night that the Maine Department of Transportation will erect a four-way stop at the intersection of Harris Hill Road and Poland Corner.

Town Manager Matt Garside asked DOT officials last December to look into making the heavily trafficked area a four-way stop.

A study done by the DOT this spring found 18 reported accidents had occurred in the last 10 years, including eight in the last three years alone.

All accidents occurred during daylight hours and 16 of those were considered serious T-bone or angled accidents at high speeds.

Though no fatalities occurred, over 40% of the people involved were injured.

Currently, the only stop signs are on Maple Lane and Poland Corner Road.

The four-way stop signs will be posted on Elm Street running in from Mechanic Falls toward Harris Hill Road, Harris Hill Road going toward Elm Street, Maple Lane approaching Harris Hill Road, and Poland Corner Road coming up to Harris Hill Road.

The signs will be erected in the late summer or early fall.

Resident Randy Lautz was appointed to the Regional School Unit 16 Task Force which will look at various educational aspects including teacher pay and shortage, buildings and grounds, transportation and grading systems.

Select Chair Stephen Robinson will serve as the municipal representative to the task force.
