AUBURN — Hampden Academy coach Jaimee Perry noticed that Edward Little was catching on to Charlee Chute’s pitching after four innings Friday.

Perry made the call to relieve Chute with Catarina Facchini with two outs in the bottom of the inning fifth. Facchini went the rest of the way and helped the Broncos finish off a 5-1 softball victory over the Red Eddies at Central Maine Community College.

“They were timing (Chute) out,” Perry said. “She did a phenomenal job. She worked the outside corners really well.”

Perry was glad to see the Broncos’ energy level rise as well as the bright, shinning sun at CMCC.

“The energy level was down,” Perry said. “We came together as a team. They came together and played as a team.”

Both starters, Chute and Edward Little’s (2-4) Madisyn Scott, kept the contest scoreless for the first three innings before Hampden (3-3) put three runs on the scoreboard in top of the fourth.

Chute was right on the mark from the pitcher’s circle. She struck 11 batters and didn’t give up a walk. But she felt that being relieved also helped her Broncos win the game.

“I think I started getting little bit tired,” Chute said. “We did really well hitting the ball.”

The Broncos’ Callie Small led off the fourth with a single, moved to second after Mariah Coon was hit by a pitch and held up at third base on Meg Delehanty’s sacrifice groundout to second base. Small came home on an RBI single by Emmy Chute. Coon and Chute scored when Kacey Gardiner got on due to an error at first base, putting the Broncos in command, 3-0.

Hampden got another run in the top of the fifth inning. Facchini tripled and came home on Madison Steigert’s ground out to third base.

The Broncos headed into the bottom of the fifth with a 4-0 lead, but the Red Eddies started finding success against Chute. Edward Little’s Nellie Feeney singled, moved to second on Alexis Kelsea’s single and scored on Amanda Raymond’s RBI single. Raymond had three hits for the game.

But Hampden pushed across another run in the top of the sixth after Emma Chute reached on an error and moved second on Gardiner’s groundout. Chute scored when an error occurred at second base. Chute and Small each had two hits.

Hampden had seven hits, and the Red Eddies hammered out eight.

The Red Eddies had a few more opportunities score that didn’t come to fruition.

Tiana Avila tripled in the first inning with two outs but didn’t make it home. Izzy Jalbert and Leah Thibodeau each singled but were left stranded in the second inning after Charlee Chute struck out the next three batters. Edward Little stranded seven runners for the day.

“We did have our chances, but Hampden is a good team,” Edward Little coach Elaine Derosby said. “The girls kept fighting. I am so proud of my kids.”

Scott struck out one and allowed five hits in four innings before being relieved by Kassidy Lobb in the fifth.
