JEFFERSON — Fire destroyed a residential house near the intersection of Routes 17 and 32 on Tuesday afternoon, as wind gusts carried the flames into brush across the road and led authorities to temporarily close that section of roadway to traffic.
A blue house and its barn caught fire around 12:38 p.m. and was considered a total loss, according to Fire Chief Darren Walker with Jefferson Fire & Rescue.
Walker said no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Office of State Fire Marshal.
The fire started in the barn and made its way into the house, Walker said. Wind gusts blew the flames across Route 17, which also caused a brush fire.
“It jumped (Route) 17 and started a fire on the other side,” Walker said. “The wind was blowing it hard.”
At nearly 5 p.m., Walker said crews were still finding hot spots to put out in the house. Around 10 other local agencies assisted Jefferson Fire & Rescue.
Route 17 partially opened back up to one lane, but Augusta Road was still closed late Tuesday afternoon.
