A man was killed Sunday evening when his car crashed into a tree in Kittery, police said.
Kittery police and fire responded to a crash just before 7 p.m. near 139 Dennett Road, according to the Kittery Police Department.
The driver, Richard Parker, 69, of Eliot, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Parker is believed to have suffered a medical event at the time of the crash. It is the town’s third deadly crash caused by a medical event in less than a month, Chief Robert Richter said.
Michael Cox, 74, of Kittery, died on May 17 while driving north on Route 1 in Kittery when he drifted over the median and hit a car head-on, police said.
An unnamed 59-year-old man from Lee, New Hampshire, died after another head-on collision at the intersection of Route 236 and Stevenson Road on May 31, according to police.
When someone dies after experiencing a medical event while driving, the crash is not included in state fatal motor vehicle crash data, the department said. There have been 23 fatal crashes so far this year, according to state data.
Officers at the scene Sunday found a 2001 Toyota Camry had hit a tree and had significant damage to the front of the vehicle. Parker, the only occupant of the vehicle, was trapped in the car and unresponsive when police arrived, police said.
The Maine Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Police do not believe alcohol and drugs were factors in the crash.
The crash is being investigated by Kittery police and the York Police Department accident reconstruction team.
