100 Years Ago: 1923

While the Lewiston police were searching her house at 268 Lincoln Street, looking for liquor, Mrs. Henry L. Wiseman kept on with her washing. And while she scrubbed the clothes, Capt. Picard scoured the premises for alcohol, which they allege “Tex” Wiseman had been hiding from them.

50 Years Ago: 1973

A suit accusing Maine coastal wardens of piracy has been filed in U.S. District Court here by a New Hampshire lobsterman arrested in disputed boundary waters last January. Edward B. Heaphy, 32, of Dover alleged in his action Wednesday that the wardens violated federal piracy laws by seizing 60 of his lobster traps.

25 Years Ago: 1998

Norm Ross doesn’t understand what’s the big deal about turning 100. “You don’t give [age] much thought,” he says. But Bates College officials gave it some thought as they honored Ross Saturday for his many years of dedication to the college. Although a little early – Ross doesn’t actually turn 100 until Aug. 7 – a large crowd of alumni, staff and friends gathered to sing “Happy Birthday,” eat cake and celebrate the achievements of Ross and his wife, Marjorie. The ceremony was highlighted with a slide show depicting the evolution of the college during Ross’ time there.
