100 Years Ago: 1923

Auburn’s hotel project has been again discussed by the directors of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce. The lot of land on Turner and Cushing Streets, next to the Auburn Post Office, is most likely. The price quoted for this is not absolutely determined; but is believed to be the price for which it could be bought.

50 Years Ago: 1973

A break in at a Greene restaurant was reported to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department today, Cash wasn’t stolen, but food was. The break occurred at the Happiness Is Restaurant on Route 202, operated by Mr. and Mrs. Osborn Harvey. Reported at 6:10 a.m., it was determined the break occurred during the night. Missing was $100 worth of food, from a freezer and refrigerator. A door was removed to gain entrance.

25 Years Ago: 1998

The police chief said Friday he is alarmed by the escalating number of crimes being committed by juveniles. Complaints made to the Police Department continued to spiral upward in May, up nearly 100 from the previous month. Although complaints generally go up during the summer, Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said such a sharp increase is unprecedented, bringing the total for the month to almost 400, the largest number ever recorded.
