A ram that escaped from Ram Island Farm in Cape Elizabeth more than two weeks ago remained at large Tuesday night.

The animal was spotted earlier in the day in the vicinity of Two Lights State Park, but has not been captured, Cape Elizabeth police Capt. Brent Sinclair said in an email Tuesday evening.

The ram escaped on June 11 while it and another ram were being placed in a pen at Ram Island Farm off Route 77. Sinclair said he was told by the farm manager that the animal is not dangerous.

The two males had been relocated from their home on Richmond Island so they could be shorn and separated from the more than 50 blackfaced Scottish sheep that live year-round on Richmond Island.

Both rams were scheduled to live on the mainland for the summer before being returned to the island in the fall.

Police are asking people not to approach the animal. Police and Sprague Corp., the owners of Richmond Island and Ram Island Farm, are asking people to report the ram’s location and direction of travel to the police (767-3323) or to Sprague Corp. (828-0011).

Richmond Island is located just off the coast of Cape Elizabeth and is maintained by caretakers from May to October. The 226-acre island is home to a herd of about 50 blackfaced Scottish sheep. They live off vegetation and kelp.
