The RSU 78 Board of Education met on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at the Rangeley Lakes Regional School. The meeting began with a presentation from high school science teacher and team leader Mrs. Darlene Woodman. Mrs. Woodman presented on how the high school used the additional professional development time during the Ski Tuesday program. Please see the video on the RLRS YouTube page for further details.

The board unanimously voted to adopt the 2023-2026 Teacher Contract.

Board Chair Mary Richards shared that the board celebrated Teacher Appreciation Day on May 2, 2023. The lunch the board provided was deeply appreciated.

Superintendent Georgia Campbell shared that the Title I allocation grant for summer school was approved. Mrs. Campbell is attending the upcoming Northern Franklin County School Safety Committee meeting as well as the Western Maine Superintendent Association Women’s Academy meeting. Lastly, high school welcomed a visit from two Tibetan refugees who shared about their history and their experience with students.

Mrs. Campbell read updates from Principal Laliberte that the state testing has begun and is going well. Meeting #3 for Portrait of a Learner (POL) is complete, and the final POL meeting is scheduled for June 7, 2023. Mr. Laliberte also noted that he fully supports the overnight trip to be discussed later in the meeting.

Student Representative Nichole Lemay shared that five RLRS students were inducted into the National Honor Society last week, ASVAB testing is coming up, and varsity baseball season has begun. This year’s team is co-ed.

Student Representative Angelica Chavaree-Woodward shared details about the Spanish class trip to Puerto Rico and that dual-enrollment college courses have wrapped up for the spring semester and students are gearing up for the summer courses.

Committee Reports included updates from Policy Committee, next meeting is June 5, 2023; Finance Committee, budget review, contract bid review, and tractor purchase; Facilities Committee, bids for groundwork, paving discussion, and other concerns; and Negotiations Committee which wrapped up their work.

Three teachers moved from a two-year probation into continuing contracts: Sarita Crandall (middle school science), Rebecca Ellis (first grade), and Kimberly Hockmeyer (fourth grade). All three are continuing in their roles at RLRS.

The board approved an overnight trip for ten students to attend the Maine Canoe Symposium with Mrs Nini Christensen, with the addition that the Board of Education pay any remaining balances after outstanding fun requests are answered with the reasoning that no student should be denied the opportunity based on financial need. The board also unanimously approved the spring, summer and fall groundskeeping bid from Bees Green Thumb, LLC.

Additionally, the board unanimously voted to move the June meeting to Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at 6:00PM at the school. Budget warrants were read, passed unanimously, and signed.
