Three winners of prestigious educational scholarships were announced during graduation ceremonies at the Rangeley Lakes Regional School on June 17.

Amelia Stokes and Cheyenne Avery will share the Seasonal Friends of Rangeley Scholarship, and Isabelle Whittier was awarded the Rangeley Lakes Region Legacy Scholarship.

Amelia and Cheyenne each will receive a multi-year stipend totaling $3,500, and Maya will get $1,500.

All three students were recognized for their strong academic records, activity in various school programs and participation in community service, which is a major criterion used in selecting recipients of these scholarships. In addition, in their application for the awards, they all voiced a desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

Amelia Stokes

Amelia graduated first in her class, served as valedictorian and won a number of both national and other scholastic honors. In addition to attending school in Rangeley she simultaneously took classes in several colleges and universities.

Looking forward to her full-time college experience, Amelia anticipates it will be “more than simply earning a degree. It’s also about experiences, knowledge and lessons that will shape your future and success.” She plans to further her education in the business finance field.

Cheyenne Avery

Cheyenne augmented her list of student activities with a number of community volunteer experiences. She plans to attend a Maine community college to pursue an Associate Degree in Conservation Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice.

Cheyenne credits her interest in that subject to time spent hunting with her grandfather, and learning about its positive contributions to the food supply and balance of nature, and with a Rangeley Lakes Region game warden. She will be the first in her family to attend college, and also plans to pursue her dream of becoming a Maine Game warden.

Isabelle Whittier

Isabelle Whittier received the Legacy Scholarship, which is supported by permanent residents of the area, and others, and to which contributions may be made in honor or memory of a person, living or dead. Isabelle described how she set goals for herself at school which, among other things, led to her being elected Student Council president. That enabled her to organize and lead a number of community service activities.

The Directors of the Seasonal Friends of Rangeley/Legacy Scholarship program are Rebekah Carmichael, Rangeley Town Treasurer; Heidi Deery, Student Services Director at the Rangeley Lakes Regional School; Seth Noonkester, Branch Manager, Franklin Savings Bank, and one anonymous seasonal resident.
