PARIS — The Town Office is losing a talented and valuable member of its staff due to the unruly behavior of several town residents, Select Board Chairman Christopher Summers said at Monday’s board meeting.

Town Manager Dawn Noyes advised the board that Deputy Clerk Angela Packard has submitted her resignation and will leave at the end of July. While pay was part of the reason, Noyes said, it was recent rude behavior by certain residents who came into the office and bullied officials that proved too much for her.

Packard also serves as deputy tax collector, deputy treasurer and deputy registrar.

Board Chairman Christopher Summers, who is also code enforcement officer, called Packard an exemplary employee, who tried to put a smile on everyone’s face while serving the public.

“That’s disgusting,” Summers said of the rude actions by some members of the public. “We lost a good deputy clerk. It’s a black eye for this town.”

In other business, Summers and Scott McElravy were unanimously reelected as chairman and vice chairman, respectively,  for one year. Selectman Peter Kilgore nominated them. Supporting the nominations were Michael Bailey and newly-elected board member Matthew Brackett.

Noyes said she has provided the assessor with the 2023-24 budget numbers in order to determine the tax rate and the potential overlay. She said about $7 million will need to be raised through taxation, slightly more than the $6.8-$6.9 million needed last year.

She said the town received some good news since last week’s town meeting: its share of the Maine School Administrative District 17 budget is $15,000 less than anticipated.
