Author Lydia P. Brownlow will be speaking at the Rangeley Public Library on Thursday, July 20th, at 3:00 PM. Lydia will discuss some of the night scenes from her debut novel, *Vermilion Sunrise*, a sci-fi adventure story that takes place on a planet with no light pollution. The presentation, appropriate for all ages, focuses on how writing the book led the author to learn about and support the dark sky movement. Lydia will have book recommendations for readers ages 1-101. She will be selling and signing *Vermilion Sunrise*, her YA novel aimed at ages 12 and up.
Lydia grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. Fortunately, her parents didn’t make her choose between being a literature kid or a science kid, so she became both. She majored in English at Rice University and earned a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin. Though a lawyer by training, Lydia has often found herself in the classroom instead of the courtroom. She’s taught high school, junior high, college, and law school.

A determined optimist, she loves adventures big and small, especially those taken with her husband and two sons. In her younger years, Lydia thought a perfect day meant time swimming and time curled up with a good book. Decades later, that’s still a perfect day!
Lydia has been visiting the Rangeley area since 1990, and she and her family have been seasonal residents since 2007. Though *Vermillion Sunrise* is set on another planet, you can see Rangeley-related influences throughout the novel, including the way the characters describe the night sky and an important reference to loons. Lydia says that the Rangeley attitude of appreciating the landscape’s natural beauty has always appealed to her, and that attitude permeates the novel as well.
