PARIS — State police are investigating the death of a female inmate at the Oxford County Jail on Friday, state officials said Monday in a news release.
Jail Administrator Capt. Dana Dillingham confirmed Monday the death of Tamara Miles, 48, who officials said lived in Lewiston.
The Sheriff’s Office advised Maine State Police of the death just after 4 p.m. Friday, according to the release. Detectives and representatives from the Department of Corrections responded.
Miles’ body was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy and her identity was confirmed, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss wrote.
According to Lindsey Chasteen, office administrator for the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, “the cause of death is currently pending further studies.” The release said those studies are toxicology results.
Miles’ sister, Samantha Freeman, initially alerted the Sun Journal of Miles’ death. While Miles was reported by authorities as being from Lewiston, Freeman said Miles had been homeless for about a year.
Miles was arrested at 11:11 a.m. Wednesday at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway on charges of violating conditions of release and disorderly conduct with loud unreasonable noise.
Her death is being investigated by the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit-South, which is standard procedure, Moss said.
