George E. Mattor

ROXBURY – George E. Mattor, 94, passed away on July 17, 2023 at the South Paris Veterans’ Home.George was born on Dec. 16, 1928, in Oxford to Ernest and Gertrude (Witham) Mattor. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1947.After high school, he served as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne.George was a hard worker, taking jobs in local paper mills, as a car saleman and other labor positions.In his younger years, he enjoyed hiking, basketball, boxing, weightlifting and baseball. In high school, he was a baseball pitcher and could pitcher left or righthanded! More recently, he enjoyed watching New England sports, especially the Red Sox.George also enjoyed reading and setting up the occasional yard sale.In later years, he became an avid collector and dealer of coins, military items and many other treasures. He spent many weekends setting up at flea markets in Maine, Massachusetts, Oklahoma and Texas.For several years, George was a snowbird, living in Oklahoma in the winter and Maine in the summer. He enjoyed selling treasures from Maine to his southern clientele.George is survived by his brother, John of Hollis; sons, William of Roxbury and Michael of Rumford; daughter, Loretta of Alfred; five grandchildren, Raelene, Michelle, Megan, Benjamin and Ernest; and five great-grandchildren.He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Nancy; and grandchildren, Kelly and Eric.There will be a graveside service held at a later date.In lieu of flowers, please donate to George’s favorite charities: St. Jude, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
