BETHEL—The Museums of the Bethel Historical Society on Broad Street in Bethel have announced the presenters for this summer’s Mill Brook Craft Series. Each Thursday afternoon in August at 1 p.m., skilled craftspeople will lead workshops in the Twitchell Education Center, a replica (on the exterior) of Dr. Moses Mason’s 19th-century library building.

Each week, a different craft will be highlighted, with historical background, demonstrations, and opportunities for hands-on experience provided to participants.

August 3 – Wood carving with Jim Oliver. An avid woodworker since college, Jim participated in his first ten-day immersive carving class at the Vermont Raptor Academy upon his retirement in 2018 and has been carving raptors, sea birds, songbirds, and fish ever since.

August 10 – Painting with watercolor artist Elina Sh. Upon coming to the United States four years ago, Elina began to use her sketchbooks to record her travels and her process of falling in love with New England. She will demonstrate and share her work and discuss her creative process.

August 17 – Stained glass with Lizz Peacock. The owner of Puzzle Mountain Glassworks in Newry, Lizz creates stained glass pieces inspired by nature and found objects.

August 24 – Spinning with Pat Cherella and her sister, Suzanne. Pat and Suzanne will demonstrate the art of making yarn on a spinning wheel, a craft that has probably existed in similar form for more than a thousand years.

All workshops begin at 1 p.m. The Twitchell Education Center is located next to the Dr. Moses Mason House at 14 Broad Street in Bethel. There is no charge for these programs, but donations are gladly accepted.

The 2023 Mill Brook Craft Series is supported by the Florence Bickford Hastings Traditional Crafts Fund and presented in memory of beloved volunteer and educator Tineke Ouwinga.
