AUBURN — A Mechanic Falls man was charged with attempted murder Tuesday in connection with shooting at a Mechanic Falls campsite in May.

Sean Hutchins Androscoggin County Jail

Sean Hutchins, 37, was indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury on two other felony charges, including reckless conduct with a firearm and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, each punishable by up to five years in prison.

The attempted murder charge carries a maximum penalty of up to 30 years in prison.

Hutchins also was charged with refusing to submit to arrest or detention and violation of condition of release, both misdemeanors.

He allegedly fired four rounds from a .40-caliber handgun at a man on the evening of May 25, police said.

The two had apparently been arguing when Hutchins took the man’s pistol from him, fired it at him, then fled into nearby woods, police said.

Police later recovered four shell casings in that area.

Hutchins emerged from the woods, was reportedly intoxicated and had complained to a homeowner that nobody cared about him, police said.

That homeowner persuaded Hutchins to pocket the gun and leave, but he later heard a gunshot.

Hutchins continued on to another residence where he knocked on the door, but couldn’t gain entry, police said.

He then fled back into the woods, according to police.

An area resident reported to police he saw Hutchins behind him home.

Police converged on the area and pursued Hutchins as he fled back into the woods, police said.

Hutchins was later captured and taken to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. He was evaluated and cleared medically for booking at Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where he remained in custody Tuesday.
