PARIS — At the Aug. 17 meeting of the Paris Cape Historical Society, author Mary Morton Cowan spoke on her family history that inspired her new book, “Trouble in Nathan’s Woods,” set during World War I at a New Hampshire lumber camp. She is a member of the Morton family that owned the Paris Manufacturing Company.

The family operated a lumber camp in Crystal, N.H., near the Canadian border, which supplied wood for PMC. Morton’s presentation included many photos of the camp from the early and mid-20th century, including this one of her father, Hugh, displayed to the left of Morton.

The PCHS chairs in which the audience is seated were made by PMC, and the company was also well known for the sleds it manufactured.
