LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías was arrested on a felony charge of corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said Tuesday.
Urías was arrested late Sunday night by Department of Public Safety officers in Exposition Park, south of downtown Los Angeles. The park is home to BMO Stadium, where Lionel Messi was playing in a Major League Soccer game with numerous celebrities in attendance.
LASD Deputy Maria Lucero confirmed the felony charge. DPS has yet to release details of the arrest. Other than acknowledging “an incident involving Julio Urías,” the Dodgers have declined to comment.
Urías posted $50,000 bail and was released early Monday morning, according to sheriff’s department booking records. He is due in court Sept. 27.
Major League Baseball has started to investigate.
Urias, a 27-year-old Mexican-born pitcher, was arrested in May 2019 for domestic battery. He was suspended 20 games by MLB, but he wasn’t prosecuted by the Los Angeles city attorney on the condition he complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling program. No player has been suspended twice under MLB’s joint domestic violence policy since it was established in 2015.
“I haven’t addressed the team,” Manager Dave Roberts said. “I think everyone is aware of it. I think everyone feels the same way I do as far as a very unfortunate circumstance. I don’t think anyone knows all that has gone on and went on. I think our guys are just focused on today and let things play out.”
Urías would be the second star player on a contending team probed by MLB in recent weeks after Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco was put on administrative leave while authorities in the Dominican Republic investigated him for an alleged relationship with a minor.
Urías is 11-8 with a 4.60 ERA in 21 starts this season and is set to become a free agent after the World Series. He is pitching on a $14.25 million, one-year contract in his final season of salary arbitration eligibility.
YANKEES: First baseman Anthony Rizzo will miss the remainder of the season with post-concussion syndrome.
Rizzo was placed on the injured list Aug. 3, more than two months after getting hurt May 28 when he collided with Fernando Tatis Jr. of San Diego on a pickoff play.
GIANTS: San Francisco reinstated reliever John Brebbia from the 60-day injured list.
San Francisco also placed veteran outfielder AJ Pollock on unconditional release waivers, and right-hander Tristan Beck was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.
METS: Right-hander Carlos Carrasco broke his right pinky finger in a weightlifting accident and will miss the rest of the season.
Carrasco, 36, was lifting weights before Sunday’s game against Seattle when he set down a 50-pound dumbbell and it flipped over, landing on his pinky.
TUESDAY’S GAMES
ASTROS 14, RANGERS 1: Jose Altuve homered his first three times up, starting with a pair off All-Star right-hander Nathan Eovaldi in his return from the injured list, and Houston rolled to a win in Arlington, Texas.
Altuve greeted Eovaldi with a leadoff homer, then ended the pitcher’s first outing since July 18 with another drive into the seats in left field on the 35th pitch with one out in the second.
The third homer – and 15th of the season for Altuve – was to center field off Dane Dunning, a starter who came out of the bullpen so the Rangers could get Eovaldi back on the mound without a rehab appearance coming off a right forearm strain.
CARDINALS 10, BRAVES 6: Michael Soroka’s third promotion to Atlanta this season in his comeback from two Achilles tendon injuries has led to more health concerns for the right-hander.
Tyler O’Neill and Nolan Gorman hit two-run homers to spoil Soroka’s return to Atlanta and the St. Louis Cardinals held on to beat the Braves in Atlanta.
Braves Manager Brian Snitker said Soroka (2-2) is headed to the injured list after experiencing numbers in his fingers. Soroka, who was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett for the start, lasted only three innings and allowed five runs on four hits, including the two homers.
TWINS 8, GUARDIANS 3: Jorge Polanco hit a sacrifice fly and Donovan Solano added a three-run triple in Minnesota’s five-run eighth inning as the Twins won at Cleveland to push their lead in the AL Central to seven games over second-place Cleveland.
BREWERS 7, PIRATES 3: Brandon Woodruff pitched seven shutout innings and Mark Canha’s two-run single capped a six-run fifth inning as the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers won at Pittsburgh.
Woodruff (4-1) allowed just two hits, singles to Ji Hwan Bae in the first inning and Endy Rodriguez in the fifth. Woodruff also had six strikeouts and two walks while improving to 14-3 with a 2.36 ERA in his last 29 starts dating to last season.
MARLINS 6, DODGERS 3: Bryan De La Cruz hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to break a tie in tas Miami won at home.
