MEXICO — A family safely escaped their burning home at 35 Roxbury Road early Monday morning after cooking grease caught fire, Mexico Fire Chief Mat Theriault said.

Owner Darren Jodrey, his girlfriend, Sue Halacy, her daughter and their dog all got out without injury shortly after midnight, Theriault said.

The chief said firefighters make a quick stop of the flames, limiting damage to the first floor of the two-story home. There was some water damage to items in the basement, where the daughter lived.

The quick action also spared neighboring buildings, which were as close as 6 feet.

Theriault said he was told Jodrey did not have insurance on the house.

The Red Cross assisted the family with hotel vouchers.

Selectman Kevin Jamison said Tuesday that Shaunna Lamontagne of the River Valley Free Store in Mexico will collect items for the family.

Theriault thanked the agencies that assisted, including Mexico, Rumford, Dixfield, Peru and Roxbury fire departments, Med-Care Ambulance, Mexico Police Department, the Red Cross, Mexico Water District, Central Maine Power, Oxford County Regional Communications and the Office of State Fire Marshal.
