The Winthrop Maine Historical Society will host an evening about Winthrop apple history from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Winthrop History and Heritage Center at 107 Main St. in Winthrop.
The event will feature The Fairbanks Heirloom Tree from the late 1700s to the present. Benjamin Fairbanks settled in Winthrop in 1766 between Lake Cobbossee and the Upper and Lower Narrows ponds. The Fairbanks then developed the Fairbanks apple.

Kerry Anne Wilkins will deliver a talk at the event. Wilkins became excited that a Fairbanks tree, an apple tree surviving over 200 years, might possibly still exist on the former Fairbanks homestead. She took a graft back to an orchard to grow another Fairbanks tree and hopes to send an apple off to get its DNA tested.
This event will begin with an apple pie bake off starting at 5 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the bake off will be canceled.
