CYCLING
SPANISH VUELTA: Sepp Kuss is set to become the first American man to win one of cycling’s Grand Tours in a decade after he protected his lead on the last competitive day of racing at the Spanish Vuelta.
Kuss kept his 17-second lead over Jumbo-Visma teammate Jonas Vingegaard after the 20th and penultimate stage.
Kuss will wear the red leader’s jersey heading into Sunday’s final stage, when cycling custom dictates that title rivals respect the leader’s advantage in the largely ceremonial arrival to Madrid.
The last American man to win one of cycling’s three-week races, which includes the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia, was 2013 Vuelta winner Chris Horner.
Wout Poels won Saturday’s 129-mile ride from Manzanares El Real to Guadarrama.
Kuss crossed the finish line flanked by Vingegaard and fellow teammate Primoz Roglic, with the three exchanging hand shakes and patting one another on the back as they rode over the final meters.
GOLF
EUROPEAN TOUR: Ludvig Aberg of Sweden closed in on his second straight victory when he posted a 6-under 66 at Wentworth for a two-shot lead over Connor Syme and Ryder Cup teammate Tommy Fleetwood in the BMW PGA Championship at Virginia Water, England.
Aberg, in only his fourth month as a pro, was at 16-under 200. The former Texas Tech player won the European Masters in Switzerland two weeks ago and was picked for the Ryder Cup the next day.

FORMULA ONE: Max Verstappen’s historic run of 10 Formula One wins in a row looks set to end after he qualified in 11th place for the Singapore Grand Prix.
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. took the pole for Sunday’s race ahead of George Russell of Mercedes and the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, as Verstappen’s Red Bull team had its worst qualifying results of the season.
NASCAR: Truck Series champion Zane Smith has been signed to a multi-year contract with Trackhouse Racing and will be loaned to Spire Motorsports for a Cup Series ride in 2024.

Otto Virtanen saved two match points in the decisive tiebreaker to beat Mackenzie McDonald, 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (7), and Emil Ruusuvuori defeated Tommy Paul 7-6 (1), 6-4.
Finland joins the Netherlands in advancing out of Group D and reaching the Final 8 in Malaga, Spain, in November.
