NEWRY – Barbara B. Gallant passed away Sept. 5, 2023. Barbara Gallant was born on June 10, 1928 in Rumford, the daughter of Leo George and Elinor (Farrar) Bartlett. She attended grade school at the Lufkin school and graduated from Stephens High School in 1945.
She attended Pelletier Beauty School in Lewiston graduating in 1946. Barbara had worked at shops in Wilton and Rumford before coming to Bethel where she worked for Marilyn Gilbert at a shop on Main Street. She bought out the shop and operated there until 1953 when she was married to Stanley W. Gallant on Sept. 5, 1953, and moved the shop to Mechanic Street in Bethel, where she operated it into the late 1970s.
Barbara was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. Her other interests were gardening, fishing, berry picking and camping. She enjoyed spending time at her camp at Upper Dam.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband “Peanut” of 50 years, sisters Alice (Bruce) Ramey, Fay (Karl) Smith and sisters-in-law Toots, Marie and Margaret.
She is survived by two sons, Theodore Gallant and wife Marjorie of Windham and Dennis Gallant and wife Candice of Camden; one daughter Sheila Fleet and husband Jeffrey of Hanover; one sister Helen Ladd and husband Jack of Woolwich; and three grandchildren, Casey Fleet, Michael Fleet and Malcolm Gallant.
Memorial services will be held at Bethel United Methodist Church, Main Street, Bethel on Saturday Sept. 23 at 3 p.m., followed by a reception to follow at the Newry Grange.
